Replacing other protocols enables massive scaling and eliminates the need for mains power

January 17, 2024 – NeoCortec demonstrated the effectiveness of its NeoMesh wireless mesh networking solution by implementing it in a modified smart thermostatic radiator valve from Danfoss. The goal was to prove the performance of NeoMesh in a leading networked smart valve and show how easily even pre-existing models can switch to NeoMesh and benefit from greater scalability and lower power consumption.

Radiator valves are a strong fit for smart-building deployments because they make it possible to monitor and control room temperature centrally. The Danfoss Ally range uses Zigbee for networking, but Zigbee’s limited scalability and need for mains-powered routing make it impractical for larger buildings. By contrast, NeoMesh can scale almost infinitely, and nodes can run on two AA batteries for up to seven years.

NeoCortec removed the existing Zigbee stack from the transceiver in the Ally eTRV and replaced it with the NeoMesh stack. A trial using multiple modified eTRVs showed that a network with much greater range and lower power consumption than the original configuration could be created, making it realistic to deploy hundreds or even thousands of smart radiator valves in the same building without mains-powered routers.
