Processing of data may be moved from local edge processing, at the site, to processing in the cloud. To do this, several LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) technologies are available. Examples of these are NB-IoT, LTE-M, GSM as well as LoRaWAN.

The benefits of these LPWAN technologies are many, among them are (i) massive coverage in many areas, (ii) potential for low power allowing for battery operation,

(iii) ability to transmit small data packets at infrequent intervals, (iv) less interference as it works in licensed spectrum, and many more benefits.

The disadvantages however is the subscription cost associated with each device. Furthermore, indoor coverage can still be challenging. And whereas LPWAN devices can be low power, their power consumption is still higher than NeoMesh.

NeoMesh is a local, low power network. Whereas NeoMesh does not need a gateway or coordinator for data to be routed around in the network, it does need a gateway whenever data is to be exchanged with e.g. the cloud. When the gateway is equipped with NeoMesh on one side and LPWAN connectivity on the other then you can reach all sensors in the building, wherever they are, from the cloud using only a single NB-IOT, LTE-M or GSM subscription.

NeoMesh in combination with our NeoGateway software is therefor a great extension of those LPWAN technologies. The benefits of using NeoMesh as an extension of LPWAN technologies, are:

  • Reduced power consumption compared to all devices connecting separately to the cloud via LPWAN
  • Improved coverage and reach – especially in buildings and other areas with restricted coverage
  • Cost optimization – less subscription cost and no need for expensive sim modules
  • Sensor to sensor communication can be done directly – without having to go through the cloud
  • Local processing and edge computing
  • Network resilience and redundancy – even if the LPWAN network goes down will the local network operate as normal

Frequently asked questions

What is NeoMesh’s LPWAN extension?
NeoMesh’s LPWAN extension allows seamless integration with NB-IOT and other LPWAN protocols - creating hybrid IoT networks. Our NeoMesh gateway software allows for easy transfer of data between the local network and the LPWAN network
What are the benefits of combining NeoMesh with NB-IOT?
Combining NeoMesh with NB-IOT increases the ruggedness and reliability of the local connectivity, it reduces the cost as only the gateway(s) need subscription to the NB-IOT, and it allows for effective transfer of data from the local network into the cloud.
What use cases benefit from combining NeoMesh with LPWAN?
Applications where the nodes may be hard to reach using the LPWAN protocol. Typically inside of buildings or with industrial areas where radio signals are being blocked or interferred. Applications sensitive to separate subscription cost for each device connected.
How do I get a gateway compatible with NeoMesh?
See our gateway page.
What do you mean with LoRaWAN extension?
NeoMesh have versions of the protocol running LoRa modulation. The same devices running NeoMesh on LoRa also can run LoRaWAN. And vice versa. By running a local LoRaMesh you do not need to have all devices within range of the LoRaWAN gateway. Contact us to learn more about this.
